Chilehaus
The city’s proximity to the water and shipping has also provided some special architectural gems. Chilehaus is one of the most impressive buildings in Hamburg built in the style of “clinker expressionism” (1922-24) by the architect Fritz Höger for the merchant Henry Brarens Sloman, who for several years had an important nitrate import from Chile.
The Chilehaus is 36,000 square meters and the eye-catcher is especially the pointed eastern end of the house which suggests the bow of a ship pointed to the east. Quite impressive and right in the center, down towards Speicherstadt. Look into the entrance hall and get an impression of the architecture. Also notice the sunken terraces on the upper floors.
